Some people may disagree with me, but for the most part, I believe that rugs should be disposable. With 3 boys and 2 dogs, there is NO WAY I am ever going to invest in a rug at this stage (or maybe ever). I’m just not. There are so many great rugs available that are pretty much free compared to the rugs that my parents and others of their generation would “invest” in. Maybe this is just the millennial wanna be in me, but I don’t want a $5k custom rug that is going to get trashed no matter what. I’d rather throw down a great jute rug for a couple hundred bucks and then layer a fun 5×7 over it. I have many resources for my almost free rugs…I’ll list a few to get you started:
There are so many ways to go about rug layering. You can start with a plain basic natural fiber rug and layer it with a fun bright overdyed rug or a fun animal print. You can also start with a striped patterned rug and layer it with another more subtle pattern on top. So many options! The best thing is that the rug you throw on top is smaller – so when your dog pukes on it or your kids spill fruit punch on it, the replacement options are far more palatable.
Here are some images of rug layering in my house.
